May 25, 2017 -- A Day at Sea


A Day at Sea
After a great night’s sleep, we got up at 6:30 am with the ship sailing in the Pacific with 6 ft+ waves, a good head wind and a mixture of sun and clouds.  We will be sailing all day to Ketchikan, Alaska.  After a very nice breakfast at Sabatini’s Restaurant, we went to the naturalist’s very informative glacier lecture in the theatre. According to him, the scenery will get progressively prettier the further north we travel on this trip and we will see the greatest number of glaciers when we cruise in Glacier Bay National Park and the College Fjord.  These will be our last two days on the cruise. 
The sea was fairly rough today and you could feel it on the ship.  So, no opportunity to use the balcony except to step outside to take a couple of pictures.

Therefore, most of the day was spent exploring the ship, relaxing, and seeing the movie “Hidden Faces” in the afternoon.

Relaxing Before Dinner

We had a great dinner at the Bordeaux restaurant:  Caesar Salad, Duck Breast appetizer (Larry), Medallions of Beef (Bev), Leg of Lamb (Larry), fruit tart (Larry).  We continue sailing throughout the night and will reach Ketchikan around 5 am with a 1 hr time change (3 hr time difference with B’ham).  We are looking forward to having about half of the day to explore Ketchikan before departing for Juneau at 2 pm.

    Very nice looking ship. I was going to joke that you were really mixing in pictures of a mall with ocean pictures.

Rafting on the Tazlina and Copper Rivers We were the only people to sign up for the rafting this in the morning and ending up having a private rafting trip on the Tazlina and Copper Rivers adjoining the Wrangle-St. Elias National Park. May 29 -- Glacier Bay, A Dynamic Wilderness

Glacier Bay, A Dynamic Wilderness Overnight we sailed toward Glacier Bay and arrived at 6 am to Bartlett Cove to take on board the Glacier Bay National Park park ranger for the day.   Although a couple of hundred years ago the entire bay was a huge glacier (100 miles long and thousands of feet deep), today the glacier is gone and what remains is a dozen tide water glaciers at the heads of their inlets in the upper bay.   The tallest peak is 15,300 ft (Mt. Fairweather) in the Fairweather Range.   The glaciers we will see flow from the Brady Icefield that caps the Fearweather Range.   The 600,000 acres of Glacier Bay NP are a federally protected marine ecosystems.   No roads lead to the park and the park is reached by either boat or air with most arriving on cruise ships.   Within the Park are fifteen tidewater glaciers.   Today we will see the Margerie, Grand Pacific, Lamplugh, and Johns Hopkins Glaciers.   Declared a national monument i...

June 2 -- Traveling to Copper River Wilderness

Traveling to Copper River Wilderness Where We are Headed Today Today was a traveling day with a departure at 8 am from Kenai and arrival in Anchorage at 10:00 am for a two-hour stop in the downtown area.   We visited a few places for some gifts and stopped by the visitors’ center.   When they heard we were going on to Denali, the lady told us we could see Mt. McKinley from Anchorage and she took us out to and down to the street for the view.   There it was on the northern horizon – a huge triangular, snow-covered mountain.   She said that only about 30% of the people who visit the park get to see the mountain.   Hopefully, the weather will be clear enough so we will see it when we visit on Monday.
